An Integrated Approach

The implementation of advisory committees on the North Shore and in the Mauricie region demonstrates Kruger’s leadership in sustainable development. In a context of partnership and knowledge sharing, the comments and suggestions of regional stakeholders on advisory committees are taken into account. This enables Kruger, as the appointed manager, to continually improve company forest practices, as well as to align its operations with the needs and expectations of all forest users. Another objective of the committees is to promote and enhance regional community participation in the planning of SFM activities. Thus, forest users are involved in the development of general forest management plans through a forum where they can not only express their concerns, but also learn more about wildlife and the forest. In all of its activities, Kruger takes into consideration future needs, as well as the social and physical factors concerning the forest environment:

  • The interests and activities of various stakeholders, including outfitters and First Nations, through consultations;
  • Diversity of forest lands, ecosystems, flora and fauna;
  • Sustainable harvesting methods and the use of environmentally friendly equipment.

Manpower and Employment Perspectives - Forest

In Québec, Kruger’s partnership approach is well illustrated by the cooperative agreement between the Gouin Reservoir Outfitters and Scierie Parent. Given the exceptional fishing and recreational potential of the Reservoir, special protective measures are taken during forest management operations in the area.

KRUGER AND THE FOREST

As stated in its Forest Policy, Kruger Inc. supports a sustainable and integrated approach to forest management which enables economic development that respects environmental, social and cultural values.

Kruger Inc. manages four million hectares of land in Québec, and its subsidiary, Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited, manages 2 million hectares of land on the island of Newfoundland, thereby ensuring a sustainable supply of wood fiber to meet their production needs.

To meet its corporate responsibilities and expectations of its customers and the public, Kruger has obtained certification to the internationally recognized ISO 14 001 Environmental Management System (EMS) Standard for all its forest operations in Québec, Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador, and CAN/CSA-Z809-02 Sustainable Forest Management for its forest operations in the Mauricie and North Shore regions in Québec, and Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The company is fully committed to integrated forest resource management. This means that in addition to the supply of high-quality raw material for the mills at competitive cost, the forest is managed to sustain all resource values, including clean water, wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities. Input from the public is an integral part of determining the key resource values to be considered in the company's forest management plans.
